What are the characteristics of a target compound bow?

4 main elements define a target compound bow:

- handedness (left or right-handed)
- draw length
- draw weight
- bow size (its axle-to-axle length or ATA-Axle To Axle)

For field archery enthusiasts, arrow speed will be important, so you'll need to look at FPS (Feet Per Second): the higher this number, the faster the bow!

How to choose a target compound bow?

Often, the power and draw length of a compound bow are indicated as ranges.

For example, for draw weight: 30-40#, 40-50#, 50-60#, or even 25-60#. This corresponds to the possible adjustment range between the minimum and maximum draw weight of the bow.

Same principle for draw length: 25-30", 28-31"... If you have a draw length of 27.5", you should choose the 25-30" range, not 28-31".

Be careful: an error in choosing power or draw length can lead to complex and costly modifications (changing cams, adjusting limbs, replacing string and cables...).

What about axle-to-axle length?

Longer draw lengths will benefit from longer bows to have a more open string angle and therefore better face contact.

Which model should I choose as a beginner?

Choose models with wider adjustment ranges. When starting out, position isn't yet well defined, and the body needs time to adjust.

Having a wide draw length range, as well as the ability to go quite low in draw weight, can allow you to progress faster and, most importantly, keep your bow longer!
