The material of the blade

It is also important to note that the characteristics of the blade depend on the content of certain elements in the material used.

For example:

The shape of the blade

Knife blades come in a wide variety of shapes. And this variety is adapted to a specific use. There are for example :

  • Recurve: The blade has a curved cutting edge for extra curvature giving a (shallow) S-shape. This shape has the advantage of giving more penetration and cutting power.
  • Straight Back: This is a blade with a straight, unsharpened, un-sloped back from the base to the tip. The cutting edge follows a parallel line to the top third and then curves towards the tip. This shape makes the blade ideal for common cutting and slicing tasks.
  • Trailing Point: This is a knife with a blade that has a sharp curve on the back. The direction of curvature of the blade is from the cutting edge to the tip. This shape allows for a longer cutting edge than all other types due to its curvature.
  • Clip Point: The Clip Point shape has an unsharpened back that extends for about half its length, before curving concavely towards the point. The edge of the blade is generally straight until the top third of the blade where it curves towards the point. This is a versatile type of blade.
  • Hawk's Bill: the blade is "hook-shaped" with a downward pointing tip, running from the back to the edge (unlike the Trailing Point models). This type of blade is mostly seen in fighting knives, or knives used for pruning branches or safety knives.

The handle

Handling and comfort when holding a survival knife are fundamental when choosing a model. These parameters are directly linked to the handle's characteristics, as this is the part with which you are in contact with the knife.

A handle that is too smooth may slip out of your hand or too rough may not be comfortable to hold. Ideally, you should find a knife with a handle that fits your hands perfectly for smooth and comfortable handling.

The knife model

There are two main types of useful survival knives:

  • Fixed blade knife models and ;
  • Folding blade knife models.

A fixed blade knife needs a sheath to prevent the blade from injuring or cutting its way through anything it touches. It must then be stored carefully to avoid possible accidents during transport.

A folding knife is very convenient to carry. Once folded, you can store your knife in your pockets without fear of an accident. However, note that a folding blade model will be more fragile than a fixed blade knife.

The weight

In survivalism or other outdoor activities, weight management of equipment is a necessity. In fact, the knife should be neither too heavy nor too light and perfectly adapted to your needs. This affects the handling and your freedom of movement when using the knife.
