Axe
A cutting tool used since time immemorial, the axe today comes with a steel metal blade attached to a handle, usually made of wood. Previously, more precisely since prehistoric times, it was called a hatchet and was formed with a blade of carved stone and a wooden handle. Even if an axe is most often used nowadays to cut wood, in the past it also served as a weapon of war. Today, you can also use it in many situations: to clear an area in the middle of a forest, to fell a tree, or to build a survival shelter. There are also different types and models of axes to choose from to meet all needs.
Different types of axes
The small axe or hatchet
As its name suggests, the hatchet is like the usual axe, but in smaller dimensions. This makes the model perfectly manageable, but also versatile. Indeed, it is used in many situations, such as tree felling and pruning. Due to its small size and light weight, the hatchet can also be used with one hand. It weighs on average between 0.5 kg to 1.5 kg, with a length of 25 to 40 cm. If you are an outdoor enthusiast or survivalist, a survival hatchet may better meet your needs.
The tactical axe for outdoor activities or survivalism
The throwing axe is the origin of the tactical axe as you know it today. It was designed for woodworking. Unlike other types of axes, however, it is made with two sides, one being sharper than the other. While true throwing axes are mainly used in competitions, as a tactical axe, it becomes a multifunctional tool for outdoor enthusiasts and survivalism enthusiasts. The sharpest blade is ideal for cutting or splitting wood. On the other hand, the less sharp side is initially used on parts of wood with knots. While the weight of a throwing axe is around 2 kg, the tactical axe is much lighter, around 500g or even less. This makes it the perfect tool for camping or bushcraft. It will also be found in your survival kit to meet different needs, but also to respond to emergencies in case of disaster.
The classic or normal axe
This is the standard axe model that is easily found in commerce, particularly in hardware and garden stores. Thanks to its great robustness and cutting precision, the normal axe is perfectly suited for splitting wood, but also for felling trees. For safe and effective use, however, this type of axe must always be handled with both hands. Indeed, it is quite heavy, generally around 1.5 kg. Moreover, it is also a bit long, from 55 to 70 cm. A classic axe is also reliable equipment for survival. It can indeed be used for cutting wood as well as for clearing a path through dense forest.
